Vancouver Awarded WWF Earth Hour City 2013 Global Champion & Aims to become World’s Greenest City by 2020

On March 19, 2013, the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Earth Hour City Challenge awarded the City of Vancouver as the Global Champion and the recipient of the People’s Choice Award. Five other cities in India, Italy, the U.S., Sweden, and Norway chosen from 66 city entrants were in competition with Vancouver as the most innovative city taking action on climate change. In the end Vancouver prevailed as the winner.

The people of Vancouver joined millions others in Canada and many more around the world in participation of the global Earth Hour on Mar 23, 2013 by turning off building lights resulting in an impressive 22% reduction in energy consumption at City Hall as measured by Pulse Energy.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a statement, “Being named the WWF’s Global Earth Hour Capital is an exceptional honor for Vancouver and more international validation of our comprehensive efforts to be the world’s greenest city.”

The mayor spearheaded an effort to drive the city of Vancouver to become the World’s Greenest City by 2020 by implementing many sustainability and carbon reduction initiatives such as the 2040 Transportation strategy to “dramatically reduce vehicle travel in Vancouver” said Mr. Robertson.

The Bloedel Conservatory lights inside the dome where tropical plants resided in a greenhouse were turned off as scheduled but the outdoor fountain lights and jet-streams remained on.     I am happy to report that the Vancouver City Council has unanimously approved a motion to re-start the New Year’s Eve tradition that has been out of fashion in Vancouver in recent years. The earliest we could be seeing that happening is at the end of 2013, in time for the NYE 2014 party.

    At the beginning of 2013, I wrote an open letter to Mayor Gregor Robertson and post it on his Facebook site and elsewhere asking for exactly that – A New Year’s Eve party in Vancouver. If my letter has something to do with this latest City of Vancouver decision to have a NYE Party in 2014, let me express my gratitude to the Mayor, City Council and others who may be involved. Much appreciated.

    A New Year’s Eve (NYE) bash is an international event that everyone celebrates.

    All cultures. All religions. All parts in the world. Americas, Asia, Europe, Arab, Oceania. Don’t matter who you are, where you, what you are, we all celebrate the beginning of a new year. NYE is also the best time for any city to stake a claim in the world media…FOR FREE!

    On NYE, Every City is Vying for Attention

    Make no mistake about it, every city is trying to grab your attention at NYE countdown. This worldwide attention is dictated by the different time zones. With the ticking of the clock, any major or even city in a certain time zone gets a fair chance to be featured in the world media as they ring in a new year.

    This is not just about celebrating locally or even nationally. It is about taking part in an international event that everyone is focusing on. It is that Olympic moment that comes every year. Every city puts on an elaborate show to stand out against the rest.

    If Vancouver won’t do it, Seattle would reap the benefits of being the crown-jewel of the Pacific NW.

    Vancouver wants to become the World’s Greenest City by 2020

    That is Mayor Gregor Robertsobn’s vision. Here’s an excellent way to sell that to the world on NYE. How? By relighting the 2010 Olympic Cauldron only at the end of the countdown and turn it off soon after the fireworks are finished to serve notice to the world that we are serious about reducing carbon emission and adhering to sustainable principles.

    Jack Poole Plaza is Perfect Place for NYE Celebration

    The Christmas Tree is there, so is the 2010 Olympic Cauldron. Robson St. & Granville Mall have none of that. Jack Poole Plaza is the perfect place to present to the world our unique heritage as a world-class city that has already hosted the 2010 Games and Expo 86.

    10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1…Olympic Cauldron is Re-lit! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

    Imagine that! What a glorious moment! Instead of a ball-drop, Vancouver should re-lit the 2010 Olympic Cauldron and the flame only comes on at the end of the count-down. And turn it off after the firework is finished. The worldwide media will pick up on that and present Vancouver’s commitment to sustainable principles and be the World’s Greenest City by 2020.

    It cost $5,000 to re-lit the Cauldron but $Millions for a 30″ global TV ad

    A single 30-second SuperBowl TV ad cost around $4 million. The same TV ad during the 2012 Summer Games is $20 Million (yes, for only 30 second). Re-lighting the 2010 Olympic cauldron would only be $5,000. If the world media picks that up, it is ALL FREE!

    The return on investment (ROI) is clearly in favor for Vancouver to host a New Year’s Eve party. The Jack Poole Plaza with a spectacular waterfront view and where the 2010 Olympic cauldron is located provides the perfect setting to serve notice to the world as the city races towards its goal of becoming the World’s Greenest City by 2020.

    An Open Letter to Mayor Gregor Robertson for a New Year’s Eve (NYE) Bash in 2014 for Vancouver, a City Intending to Become the Greenest City in the World by 2020

    Dear Mayor Robertson,

    Re: NYE Bash for Vancouver for 2014

    Vancouver needs a public, outdoor, open-to-all New Year’s Eve (NYE) Party. Not only for all citizens to celebrate the new year but also a perfect opportunity to remind the world of our unique heritage and formidable capabilities in hosting global events like the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Expo 86 and so on.

    New Year’s Eve is the single most recognized event in the world among all cultures. That is why all major cities around the globe put on an elaborate show and are competing for attention. Not only should Vancouver be among them, we should shine in our own special way to claim our position as the crown jewel of the Pacific Northwest. Please do not hand Seattle that honor. To not participate in the NYE party tradition and be in tune with the rest of the world is to miss out on one of the best times of the year to promote our city.

    Yes, there is a mini-NYE celebration at Robson Square for 2013, but the skating ring area is simply too small to host such a premiere event. Jack Poole Plaza is the right place to do it. We have the Christmas tree there with the Vancouver Convention Center and Canada Place nearby, two buildings that have connections to the city’s glorious past as host to a winter Olympic and world exposition as we look forward to build even better future.

    We could further reinforce our international image as a city that is committed to sustainability principles and reducing carbon footprint by only re-lighting the Olympic Cauldron at the moment of count-down. This would be even better than a simple ball-drop to serve notice to the world of our serious intention to become the Greenest City in the World by 2020, a vision of yours, Mr. Mayor, that many of us wholeheartedly support and feel have a role to play in the implementation of the Greenest City 2020 plan.

    Vancouver is not only a world-class city but one that many others look upon with admiration and even envy. To be without a NYE bash for a city like ours is like running a global business without an impressionable web site these days. It is not even an option. People won’t take you seriously.

    Please Mr. Mayor, allow me to urge City Hall and Council to take action to start the new year right for 2014 and plan a NYE bash for those of us who live here and use that opportunity to tell the world of our many attractive attributes as a global destination for tourists, innovative hub for leading businesses and great place to live.

    The Vancouver Christmas Market (VCM) follows the centuries-old tradition of a German Christmas market and brings all the cultural delights at this time of the year from Deutschland to all families from every community in this part of the world to help celebrate the holiday season. Besides Christmas-themed foods and entertainment, the VCM promises to offer the best shopping experience you’ll have all season as well.

    This year as was last year, the location of the Vancouver Christmas Market is at the open plaza area right next to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre (QE Theatre). It is a good location and just a short 5-minute walk from the Stadium-Chinatown Skytrain station and readily accessible to buses including some Northshore lines.

    As suggested by VCM which tries its best to follow sustainable eco-friendly principles, the best way to get the market is by making use of public transportation. Though parking is also conveniently located including one that is right underneath the QE Theatre should you decided to drive.

    This QE Theatre location is also where the First nations Aboriginal Pavilion was during the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. In fact, the founder and president of VCM, Mr. Malte Kluetz indicated that he was inspired by that global sporting event that further established the City of Vancouver as an international destination to setup a world-class Christmas market with ideas based on his homeland country of Germany.

    So what can be found inside the Vancouver Christmas Market?

    With 45 vendors participating this year, many of then from Germany and Austria, the VCM offers a sampling of products, services and entertainment from the Bavarian country and surrounding regions. Here, you will find Bavarian Weisswurst, German Bratwurst, Swiss chesses, salted Bretzels, waffles, cinnamon bakeries, fine Belgian chocolates and the many different varieties of hand-crafted and painted chocolate candies.

    Yes, there is a Carousel ride which is Vancouver’s first and only Christmas Carousel at $3 per ticket or 5 tickets for $10 too. Information for rates, tickets, prepaid special groups (of 20 people or more) and a 2-for-1 lunch pass (for downtown workers) are available at the Vancouver Christmas Market web site at http://vancouverchristmasmarket.com.

    New this season is a FREE RE-ENTRY offer. You paid once for admission and you will receive a re-entry pass that allows you to come back anytime you want for the entire season which opens its gates from November 24 to December 24, 2012, 11am-9pm with early closing on Christmas Eve (Dec 24) at 6pm.

    The Vancouver Christmas Market is largely an outdoor venue, so dress appropriately. Kaethe Wohlfahrt, Germany’s top Christmas ornament and décor company which sells hundreds of unique and one-of-a-kind Christmas decorative items, is the only shop sheltered inside a building that is part of the QE Theatre complex. Many of the outdoor shops are housed inside wooden huts. Washrooms are exterior temporary toilets (i.e. portable johns.)

    No Christmas tree, either real or fake is sold at the market, so don’t come shopping for that and you won’t be disappointed. At the market, you will find many finely-crafted Christmas items on display with everyone seemingly having a story to tell and an old-world tradition beckoning you to find out more.

    The VCM is a licensed premise, so alcoholic drinks are available for those who can be proved themselves to be 19 or over. Glühwein and a popular variant, the Feuerzangenbowle with a rum-soaked sugarloaf set on fire and dipped into the wine (usually red) are also served at the market. Adhering to the principle of sustainability to reduce waste, these popular German Christmas beverages are served in recyclable mugs. After your enjoyment, you can return the mug to get your $2 mug deposit back.

    However, due to food and liquor licensing, no dogs or other pets are allowed with the exception for guide dogs. The market is also easily wheelchair accessible.

    There is a live stage which features live bands, dancers and entertainment by artists and groups from such countries as Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Germany, Estonia and others. The Santa’s Brass Band plays traditional Christmas tunes with a toe-tapping rhythm that sees many visitors dancing with their partner around the stage.

    And yes, this is a suggestion for the organizer – The melodies from ‘The Sound of Music’ would seem to fit in the market very well and indeed one would feel ‘the hills are alive’, so perhaps we might see (and hear) some of that in the future? On the other hand, the Vancouver Christmas Market is certainly teeming with life with a constant stream of visitors milling about the merchant stalls on Sunday afternoon Nov 25. Mr Kluetz said he expects to have 160,000 visitors this year. The 2011 attendance was 130,000.

    Besides merchandizes from European producers, there are also no shortages of local and fair Trade goods including Fraser Valley honey, products from Ecofair Tarding and Tradewinds, woolen hats and clothing from Namaste National Products etc. And speaking of honey, Germany is the biggest honey-lover in the world, proclaimed one of the honey vendors at the market.

Value Village continues to support the event featuring designs by Nicolette Lang-Andersen, Mimi Lauzon and Tony Vu. Kim Cathers offers her unique brand of 68 Pound Challenge with Adhesif Clothing b y Melissa Ferreira closes the runway show on Thursday.

    On Friday (Oct 19), the last day of the ECO Fashion Week SS2013 is a series of seminars covering a range of industry subjects such as labor, manufacturing, trends, upcycling, consumer awareness etc. with ECO Fashion Week CEO & Founder Myriam Laroche and other industry experts like Martin Hojsik (Greenpeace), Tara Sawatsky (Canopy) and others.

    Eco fashion designers mostly use recycled, reclaimed and vintage fabrics for their clothing creation. As a result, a lot of the clothing designs are one-of-a-kind, or as designer Myco Anna describes hers, ‘every piece is unique in the way it combines new and recycled fabrics and fibers like a kaleidoscope.’ Some designers also give away scrap or surplus fabrics to other textile artists to utilize and work with, adhering to a totally no-waste and everything-recycled principle.

    Eco Fashion Week F/W 2012 Hollywood Green Glamour by Prophetik’s Jeff Garner, Wear Green to Walk Red Carpet

    Designer Jeff Garner and his company Prophetik brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to close the Vancouver Eco Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012 which took place April 10-12, 2012.

    As the world is more and more in tune with the environmental-friendly, green, recyclable, tree-hugging, carbon-reducing principles, you will see an abundance of Hollywood stars wearing greens as they walk the red carpet. Already, Jeff Garner Tinseltown clients include Cameron Diaz, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Sheryl Crow, the Kings of Leon and the Jonas Brothers.

    Vancouver is one of the few cities in the world that host an independent ethical fashion show event.

    Earth Hour 2011 Hydro Electric Powered Fountain Lights at Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver

    This video is inspired by the lighted fountain at the Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver and shot on March 26, 2011 from 8:30PM to 9:30PM (Earth Hour 2011). During that time, the Bloedel Conservatory lights inside the dome where tropical plants resided in a greenhouse were turned off as scheduled but the outdoor fountain lights and jet-streams remained on.

    Starting in 1989, the City of Vancouver has partnered with BC Hydro as a Power Smart Partner to reduce electrical energy use. Since then, many of buildings have undergone renovations including Vandeusen Gardens, Bloedel Conservatory, City Hall Campus and many other community centers within the city. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emission, saving costs in electricity, natural gas, water use etc.

    It was projected that GHG reduction is to be more than 20% in 2010 compared to 1990s level. Vancouver aims to be The World’s Greenest City by 2020.

    Eco Fashion Week 2011 Vancouver’s Earth-Friendly Sustainable Green Clothing Design Show

    The Eco Fashion Week (EFW) is a bi-annual fashion show that focuses on promoting and supporting the idea of sustainability, educate the public about care for the environment and by leading the clothing industry in creating apparel that is at once fashionable, trend-setting and earth-friendly.

    The green wearing and organic clothing event is important to the city’s green economy sector as well. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson recognized as such and stated that EFW helps position Vancouver as ‘the global capital of eco-friendly and sustainable fashion, nicely aligns with the City of Vancouver’s goal to be the “World’s Greenest City” by 2020’ as mentioned in the mayor’s letter of support to the show’s organizers.

    The EFW 2011 dates are February 22-25, 2011 with a schedule of event that includes a fashion runway show each day on Feb 23-25 at the Salt Building and Shangri-La Hotel (Feb 23 only) in Vancouver. EFW is organized by Aveda (Myriam Laroche, Evie Ponce, Shauna Biggar, Ashleigh Said etc.)

    Trans-Expo 2010 Shows Hybrid Diesel-Electric, GPS, Wi-Fi, Solar-Power & H.264 Technologies in Public Transit Buses

    Hosted by TransLink and South Coast British Columbia Transportation Authority, the Trans-Expo 2010 is an annual event aimed at bringing transit professionals together across Canada. This year the gathering is held at the Vancouver Convention Centre on November 16, 2010. Nearly 100 exhibitors set up booths at West Exhibit Hall C to showcase their mostly environmental-friendly products. Trans-Expo 2010 is part of the fall conference of the Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA).

    The theme of the exhibit and conference is “Moving Experiences”. The Honorable Stephanie Cadieux, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, Province of British Columbia was on hand at Trans-Expo 2010 and did a tour of a double-deck bus that is now on trial in Victoria, BC.

    For the public, a good riding experience starts at the bus shelter. To that end, as John Duthie of Daytech explains, his company builds structurally engineered shelters with a street furniture design that are easy to install, do not rust as they are made of aluminum and built to withstand extreme environment. There are no stock items at Datech as such. Everything is made-to-order to fit in with the urban landscaping of a particular community so the public feels right at home as they wait for the bus to arrive to pick them up.

    Quite a good number of newer and yet everyday technologies are also incorporated into the public transit system, many with sustainability features. Diesel-Electric hybrid engine, LED lighting, solar-powered devices, GPS, Wi-Fi, H.264 video codec etc. Many of these technologies are also not alien to the average consumer.

    Solar-powered credit card parking meters are already in use on Vancouver streets today. There are actually 300 of those around the city. Practically every car-makers have a hybrid vehicle in their line and some are pushing hard for an all-electric model. GPS navigation systems is becoming a must-have feature in smartphones. Wi-Fi access to the Internet is widely available in coffee shops and even Mcdonald’s restaurants. H.264 are the cornerstone of the newer generations of video camcorders that record in the popular AVCHD format.

    Depending on the cost of implementation, newer transportation system devices are or can be GPS enabled. For certain functions, it is a necessity such as stop announcement as in the double deck bus which will be discussed later requires real-time data obtained through a GPS link.

    Many of the features are intended to give transit riders a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. With touchscreen interface being so common in many consumer electronic gadgets these days, New Flyer Industries thought the same effortless way of interaction could be applied to buses too. No more grabbing a handle and pushing it open to get off the bus. A touch on the doorframe would suffice. The bus driver is taken care of as well. Leather driver seats are available as an option on buses that New Flyer manufacture.

    Video continues to be a driving force for security, litigation, monitoring, drivers training, fleet management and operation in the transportation industry. Cameras are being mounted inside and outside buses in strategic locations. These cameras offer wide-angle views that provide continuous visual data that can be stored onboard a computer inside the bus or monitored in real-time by transit operators in a back office. The latter idea is similar to the eye-in-the-sky concept in a casino monitoring situation. Interactive ticket vending machines made by a company like Parkeon has chip-embedded smart cards and mobile phone payment as the preferred methods of transaction although cash and credit card are still accepted. The device is solar-powered and requires no battery. 600 of these machines will replace 4,000 parking meters on the streets of Ottawa, ON.

    Video is often compressed using H.264 codec for storage and processing efficiency. Frame rates varies from 15-30 fps which give a realistic rendition of motion. One company, Seon, offers the 720×480 format for a 16:9 aspect ratio just like your HDTV at home, although the resolution for this security system is not quite up to high-definition that has a minimum resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

    Double deck bus is a concept that works well in a city like Victoria BC. Currently, there are 58 double-deckers operating in BC’s capital city. Since March 2009, Victoria has been testing a new diesel-electric double-decker. The pilot project consists of one hybrid vehicle by Alexander Dennis Ltd. (ADL) and the trial will last until mid-2011. According to Stephen Walsh, a vice-president with ADL, it is conceivable that we may one day see hybrid double-deckers operating between Victoria and Vancouver. Wide-spread use of double deck buses in Vancouver, however, is not likely because the city still has plenty of overhead trolley power lines that would restrict the areas that the 14 ft tall double-deckers can serve.

    On the other hand, the double-deckers are right for Victoria as city streets are narrower which would prove to be challenging for the 60 ft long articulated bus that many large North American cities employ. However, the more compact 40 ft long double decker has essentially the same passenger capacity (80-100) as the much longer articulated bus but are much easier to maneuver around streets that have tighter corner turns. Double deck buses also require 30% less space than articulated buses for storage and maintenance. Not to mention lesser space at each bus stops. ADL, a British company, says its hybrid bus reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20-25%.

    Inside the demo hybrid double-decker at Trans-Expo 2010, there are several overhead LCD monitors located at different areas of the two decks that are used to provide advertising messages, next stop announcement etc. It looks like advertising onboard buses maybe a good revenue generator and the company seems eager to get that message out to potential buyers.

    One feature that is becoming standard in a modern eco-friendly bus is LED lighting. Almost all hybrid buses incorporate the technology. It is easy to understand why. These light-emitting diodes not only save energy, but are also more durable and give out very little heat. All are in steps with moving towards a sustainable future.

    So much for the new technologies, yet objects that have interesting heritage values are not forgotten either. The Transit Museum Society has an on-site exhibit with a few antique transit buses on display. These are the ones that your parents or grandparents used to ride. In fact, BC has been building interurban buses over 100 years ago. In 1905, the BC Electric Railway (BCE) shop in New Westminster built Car 1207 for the opening of the new Steveston line by way of the Arbutus Corridor connecting Vancouver and Richmond. Many long-time residents among those communities still remember the streetcar line and some have longed for its return.
