30th Anniversary Brought Renewed Interest in Terry Fox’s Van Used in Marathon of Hope

Terry Fox did his cross-Canada run to raise awareness and money for caner research in 1980, so this year (2010) is the 30th anniversary of his Marathon of Hope. There has been a renewed interest on his life. A van that Terry had used in the Marathon of Hope was on display at the BC Place stadium in Vancouver back in April 2010 and I produced a video out of it. Recently, people were seeking out this video and reviewed it. Terry’s life was tragically cut short in 1981 when the cancer he had spread to his vital organs, but he had already put into motion a plan to contribute to the world 30 years ago. So far, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $550 million for cancer research. Each year, there are thousands of Terry Fox runs around the world to commemorate this unique Canadian humanitarian hero and amputee athlete.

Now that the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is over, some who live in the Greater Vancouver area may have missed the amusement rides, that carnival atmosphere, or maybe even the animal farm that they did not have a chance to fully explore. And how about that a certain small town act that they have overlooked at the PNE fair. Well, they got to experience all that once again albeit on a smaller scale at the Agassiz Fall Fair & Corn Festival 2010 that took place from September 18-19, 2010.

The Agassiz fair is a country fair with animals and livestock, goat milking contest, corn husking, education display, kids corner, fun for the whole family etc. This year, the Fall Fair is celebrating its 106th anniversary.

Once again, well-known Johnny Cash tribute artist Daryl Weyman ‘Reflections In Black’ did a tribute to Cash and sang some of the Man In Black’s most famous cowboy songs and western music including Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues & Ghost Riders In The Sky at the Agassiz Fall Fair & Corn Festival 2010.

Terry Fox Run 2010 in Vancouver’s Stanley Park, A 30th Anniversary

Terry Fox, an amputee athlete and brave cancer-fighter from Port Coquitlam, BC, attempted a cross-Canada run in 1980 and named it the Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Terry couldn’t finish his journey as the disease he was suffering from had spread to his lungs and caused too great a pain to bear. He called the marathon off just outside Thunder Bay, ON. Sadly, Terry Fox succumbed to the disease in 1981 but his message of hope had never been forgotten.

His life and journey may have been cut short, however, his influence is felt around the world. The Terry Fox Run was adopted widely all over the globe. Each year, the international Terry Fox Runs are being held in many countries from Cuba to Malaysia and from Italy to China. So far, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised more than $500 Million for cancer research.

September 19, 2010 marked the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. Hundreds of people showed up at Vancouver’s Stanley Park to support the charity event and take part in the marathon that this Canadian hero had started. This year in particular, a gentleman named Paul Klaris who had helped out at every Terry Fox Run for the last 30 years (1980-2010) also took part in the 2010 event. Paul himself is now fighting the same disease that has cut short Terry’s life.

Good luck, Paul.

Rolf Harris – Sun Arise, Didgeridoo & Dal Richards Orchestra at Vancouver PNE 2010

The song Sun Arise has an interesting history. It is an aboriginal kind of song that Australian entertainer and British TV personality Rolf Harris co-wrote with Australian naturalist Harry Butler. The song was recorded in 1962 and rose steadily to as high as #2 in the U.K. chart until Elvis Presley stopped the song on its track. At the Vancouver concert on Aug 26, 2010 at the PNE 2010, Harris was accompanied by his friend Shining Bear who played an Australian aboriginal didgeridoo (a long horn type of instrument) with Vancouver’s very own Dal Richards conducting the orchestra.

Rolf Harris and his wife came to Vancouver accidentally in 1961. Although even back then he was working in British television, Harris readily admitted that it was in Vancouver that he had honed his skill as a showman performing in front of a live audience. As the saying goes, the rest is history. When Harris returned to England in 1962, he went on to become a very successful TV personality and entertainer in both the UK and Australia among other places and even painted a portrait for Queen Elizabeth II in 2005 just prior to her 80th birthday. Harris was in Vancouver again on August 26, 2010 at the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) to help celebrate the centennial of the Vancouver fair. He performed a number of his famous tunes including Two Little Boys, Vancouver Town, Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport and Sun Arise.
