It is Vaisakhi Day in Surrey, BC, a suburb of Vancouver, on April 23, 2011. The Sikh ceremony began at 9:30AM at the Gurdwara Sahib Dasmesh Darbar commemorating the Birth of the Khalsa. Gurus spoke, gave prayers and recited from the scriptures. The celebration included dedications, gift offering, sword and armor demonstrations, spiritual worships etc. A parade was formed when the moving Gurdwara where the Holy Book, Guru Granth Sahib, was enshrined and travelled along 128th Street and the nearby neighborhood. Tens of thousands of South Asians and Sikhs gathered and walked in the procession. Along the route, free food and drinks were provided by community groups, businesses and individuals. The all-day event lasted until 4PM.

The Easter Holiday in Vancouver is a fun-filled long weekend for kids and adults alike. In 2011, the railway at the Stanley Park Miniature Train Ride is once again back in service and each year, thousands are eager to get onboard. The festivities begin on Good Friday (April 22, 2011) and end on Good Monday (April 25, 2011). The aboriginal Klahowya Village opens from 11AM-4PM. Entrance to the park is free while the train ticket is $6.50 each and includes entry to the Easter Bunny and Chicken Farmyard. Bring your own basket for some free Easter eggs. All aboard!

From Shanghai With Love…and Fashion. I’ll just call it Shanghai Vogue. The Fall/Winter season of the Vancouver Fashion Week 2011 FW2011 featured a number of Chinese designers from Shanghai – China Beauty, Open Black by Helen Lee and La Vie by Jenny Ji. These three are well-known names in Chinese fashion scene and now they are here in Vancouver and delighted many who had come to catch the final night of the VFW FW 2011 show on April 17, 2011.

China Beauty featured models moving around with flowing shawls of traditional oriental designs. Not surprisingly, Jenny Ji displayed her La Vie collection of elegant wedding dresses often decorated with Swarovski items. Helen Lee broke new ground for herself with her latest Open Black collection that reflected a modern sensibility that her home country has experienced in recent times.

Plenty of British Columbia politicians showed up at the South Asian Vaisakhi Day celebration on April 16, 2011. They include BC Premier Christy Clark who introduced her Liberal MLAs – Richard Lee, Margaret MacDiarmid, Harry Bloy, John Yap, Doug Horne, Rob Howard, Iain Black and Moira Stilwell. Prime Minister Stephen Harper also campaigned in Vancouver in the middle of a Federal Election and made a stop at the Vaisakhi celebration site on Main & 50th Ave. Mr. Harper made a speech to the thousands of Indo-Canadians who gathered there and caused quite a commotion.

Premier Clark won the Liberal Party leadership race on Feb 26, 2011 but currently does not hold a seat in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in Vitoria BC. Clark previously represented the ridings of Port Moody-Westwood and Port Moody-Burnaby Mountain between 1996 and 2005 and was Deputy Premier at one time. Clark is seeking to be elected to re-enter the legislature in a May 11 by election in Point Grey, a riding held by the former Premier Gordon Campbell who Clark succeeded.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper spent the day campaigning in the Greater Vancouver area on April 16, 2011. One of the events he attended was the Vaisakhi Day which is a day of celebration for the South Asian Sikh community. Tens of thousands of Indo-Canadians and other Vancouverites gathered around Main St. and 50th Ave. in the heart of the Vancouver South electoral district. Mr. Harper appeared on stage with a number of Conservative candidates by his side: Wai Young (Vancouver South), Trang Nguyen (Vancouver Kingsway) and Irene Yatco (Vancouver East). The PM was in Vancouver South to help swing a few extra seats that are needed not only to ensure an election victory but also if he were to form a majority government on May 02, 2011.

Vancouver Fashion Week VFW Fall/Winter 2011 (FW 2011) collection opened with some very impressive display of local clothing-design talents. One of the highlights of the evening featured on opening day (April 13, 2011) catwalk runway was Lace Embrace Atelier. Canadian designer Melanie Talkington started the company after graduating from Kwantlen Polytechnics University in 1997 and later worked in Los Angels, California to craft wardrobe and corsets for pin up and burlesque models Dita Von Tesse, Cathie Jung etc. and in the Warner Bros Hollywood movie production of Sucker Punch. Lace Embrace Atelier is still based in Vancouver Canada. The other designers at VFW FW 2011 first night runway included the exquisite work of Vancouver designers Patricia Fieldwalker and Valerio Moda and from Spain, Rosalita McGee.

Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW) Fall/Winter FW 2011 Opening Gala took place on Apr. 12 at 7PM and being launched at the Sutton Place Hotel in downtown Vancouver. VFW billed itself as Canada’s ‘West Coast’s most prestigious industry event’, creating an avenue ‘where designers, buyers, and media from East to West may connect and propose business.’

Many talented local designers such as Queenie Luo, Sarah Runnalls, Hawks Ave (Eco), Papillon Eastern, Eva Chen, The Trues, Valerio Moda and Drew William will display their latest creations. Patricia FIeldwalker not only retunred this year, the designer also took the initiative to host a charity drive to benefit victims of the Japan earthquake disaster and nuclear crisis. Hats designers such as Sova Hats and others also complimented some designers’ dresses. International designers from both Europe and Asia will also be present. The main catwalk and runway show is being staged at the Empire Landmark Hotel.

This season in particular will see an unprecedented number of high profile Chinese designers from Shanghai. Names such as Helen Lee, Jenny Ji, Xu Yan Hui etc. are familiar to fashion-watchers knowledgeable in the Asian fashion scene. Really, who can ignore China, the largest consumer market in the world and one that is rapidly growing as well? The Shanghai designers will dominate much of the Sunday evening. From Korea, Ha Sang Beg is returning again and Pauline Van Dongen from the Netherlands will also debut a collection. Check Vancouver Fashion Week for full details.
