Jesse Cook, A Mix of Rumba Flamenco, Café Mocha & Cecilia at PNE 2010

Jesse Cook plays Spanish guitar and he likes percussion music. Just don’t expect him to sing much. So what he shared with his audience on Sep 01, 2010 at the PNE 2010 concert was his superlative skill in rumba flamenco, a type of guitar playing that originated from Cuba and some of his most well-known music including Dance of Spring and Café Mocha which dominated the smooth jazz radio chart in 2008. For an encore, the band sang Cecilia, the 1970 Simon & Garfunkel tune which provided just the perfect release at the end of an evening build up by intense guitar strumming, throbbing percussion instrumentals and taut bongo drumming.

Tropitonics Sentiment Rendition of Bob Marley’s No Woman No Cry at Caribbean Days Festival 2010

The Caribbean Days Festival 2010 may have been organized by the Trinidad and Tobago Cultural Society of BC, but musically, most of the bands that performed at the festival such as Tropitonics, Clyde Shizzle, Out of Many, Maffie & Crew acknowledged reggae, Jamrock and Jamaican jamming as their influence. Tropitonics even sang Bob Marley’s famous No Woman No Cry to the crowd’s delight with a giant beach ball flying around and children in a carousel. It was one big Caribbean party filled with soca, reggae, and calypso beats and a hot parade on Lonsdale Ave. in North Vancouver on July 24-25, 2010. The Caribbean Days Festival 2010 turned out to be largely a family event after all, despite the adult-only Moses Revolution show on Saturday night. See you next year!

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope Celebrates 30th Anniversary in April 2010

The newly refurbished van used by Terry Fox and his people in the Marathon of Hope was on display at the Vancouver International Show 2010 in early April this year.

The van held such meaning for Terry’s people today as the vehicle was where Terry had slept and rested during his Marathon of Hope tour. He usually took a break after running two miles. But sometimes, the pain from his amputated leg and his body were so great that he had to stop.

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his intended cross-Canada run in St. John’s Newfoundland to raise fund for cancer research. However, his journey had to be cut short in September that year near ThunderBay, ON after he learned the cancer had spread to his lungs. Even with Pope John Paul II sending his prayers from the Vatican, Terry died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 23.

2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Terry Fox’s historic journey for charity.

Terry’s initial goal was to raise one million dollar for cancer research, but to date, Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and the Terry Fox Foundation had raised $500Million and continued to fulfill Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer.

The Terry Fox Run has also spread across the globe to Europe, Cuba, China, India and other places.

According to Fred Fox, Terry’s brother, outside Canada, Cuba is the country that has some of the most loyal followers of the Terry Fox Run.
