As one of the featured designers of the Vancouver ECO Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 (SS2013) or Season 5 (EFW05), Kim Cathers’s 68 Pound Challenge is certainly unique. The collection is so named because the garments were made entirely from 68 pounds of recycled, thrift clothing and fabric.

After completing a fashion design program at the Blanche Macdonald Centre, Kim choose to work mostly with recycled or natural material for her sustainable women’s wear and accessories which she called her kdon clothing line. She also made leather goods and restyling vintage clothes and enjoyed traveling to music festivals and farmers markets to sell her ware as well.

The soundtrack used for her catwalk runway show at the ECO Fashion Week SS2013 was overwhelmingly country music e.g. Jolene by Dolly Parton, Circle Be Unbroken by John & June Carter Cash, On The Road Again by Willie Nelson, Tennessee Flat-top Box by Roseanne cash among others.

Her fashion designs had drawn praise from around the country and were featured in Project Runway Canada season 2.

ECO Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 Sustainable Green Clothing Design show in Vancouver @ Robson Square (Oct 16-19, 2012) adheres to a Environmentally-Friendly and Totally No-Waste Principle

The ECO Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2013 (SS2013) line-up of sustainable, earth-loving and environmentally-friendly fashion designers includes Nicole Bridger, Standing Arm, Rise, Mala Imports, Voyou, Ressac, Respecterre, C5H8 and others. Value Village continues to support the event featuring designs by Nicolette Lang-Andersen, Mimi Lauzon and Tony Vu. Kim Cathers offers her unique brand of 68 Pound Challenge with Adhesif Clothing b y Melissa Ferreira closes the runway show on Thursday.

On Friday (Oct 19), the last day of the ECO Fashion Week SS2013 is a series of seminars covering a range of industry subjects such as labor, manufacturing, trends, upcycling, consumer awareness etc. with ECO Fashion Week CEO & Founder Myriam Laroche and other industry experts like Martin Hojsik (Greenpeace), Tara Sawatsky (Canopy) and others.

Eco fashion designers mostly use recycled, reclaimed and vintage fabrics for their clothing creation. As a result, a lot of the clothing designs are one-of-a-kind, or as designer Myco Anna describes hers, ‘every piece is unique in the way it combines new and recycled fabrics and fibers like a kaleidoscope.’ Some designers also give away scrap or surplus fabrics to other textile artists to utilize and work with, adhering to a totally no-waste and everything-recycled principle.

The Miss World Canada 2012 Gala Celebration included talent performances by contestants/delegates. Courtney Woodford from Triton, Newfoundland and Labrador sang an opera aria. Adding to the multicultural flavor of the evening, Poonam Punni and Nisheeth Proshanti danced to South Asian songs and music for some Bollywood-style entertainment. The night’s activities took place on May 13, 2012 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond BC near Vancouver.

For the “Beauty with a Purpose” pageant (meant to emphasize both inner and outer beauty), Tara Teng of Langley BC was crowned the winner and will represent Canada to compete in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China for the Miss World 2012 title on August 18, 2012. Miss World Canada 2012 helped raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity.

Tara Teng was crowned Miss World Canada 2012 with 1st Runner-up Lisa Deane and 2nd Runner-up Tanya Halata. The crowning of Tara Teng as Miss World Canada 2012, 1st Runner-up Lisa Deane and 2nd Runner-up Tanya Halata took place in Vancouver on May 13, 2012 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond BC.

The “Beauty With a Purpose” beauty contest helps raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity. Tara Teng became the next ambassador representing Canada to compete in the Miss World Pageant in Ordos, China (Inner Mongolia) later this year.

Miss World® Canada helps raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity. So far, the organization has raised more than $500 million globally. Beyond philanthropy, the pageant also aims to inspire women and enrich those contestants who participated for a lifelong career of giving, helping the less fortunate especially children with special needs and enabling them to build a better future.

The winner of Miss World Canada receives an all-expense paid trip to Ordos in China to compete in the Miss World® pageant, as well as scholarships, prizes, and leadership opportunities. This year’s pageant falls right on Mother’s Day and is therefore dedicated to the occasion.

Be your own model and fashion designer. You can have your cake and eat it too! That’s how Vancouver area models and fasionistas have fun.

At the Empress Spring Fashion Soirée 2012, a group of models, beauty pageant contestants and friends gathered together and enjoyed an evening of show-off your own fashion and style on runway, music and good food at the 0755 Restaurant & Lounge in Richmond, BC on April 19, 2012.

The evening’s activities was hosted by Lingli Kong, a Vancouver TV personality and a founder of Empress Communications. Increasingly, this westcoast Canadian city is having more and more of this type of events that can attract a diversity audience from different communities for people who are seeking entertainment, fashion, music, style and glamour and audience participation.

Each year, Vancouver-based Empress Communications organizes the World Music Fashion Festival (http://wmff.ca/about) and tours China with an ensemble cast of international models and fashion designers to put up catwalk runway shows in different Chinese cities. In 2011, its inaugural year, the WMFF 2011 visited Shanghai, Dalian, Chengdu, Neijing and Hangzhou during August and September.

Designer Jeff Garner and his company Prophetik brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to close the Vancouver Eco Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012 which took place April 10-12, 2012.

As the world is more and more in tune with the environmental-friendly, green, recyclable, tree-hugging, carbon-reducing principles, you will see an abundance of Hollywood stars wearing greens as they walk the red carpet. Already, Jeff Garner Tinseltown clients include Cameron Diaz, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Sheryl Crow, the Kings of Leon and the Jonas Brothers.

Vancouver is one of the few cities in the world that host an independent ethical fashion show event.

Each time Jacqueline Conoir launches a new collection, it is more than a fashion’s nights out. This was certainly true on Oct 25, 2011 when the Vancouver-based design powerhouse presented its Spring/Summer 2012 (S/S 2012) collection of Jacqueline Conoir and Jac clothing lines. For the invited guests, the new JC Studio located on 164 West 5th Ave. with its wild graffiti façade became a place for fashionistas to meet with longtime friends and make new acquaintances. And on this occasion, a brand new Jacqueline Conoir publication in a newspaper format also debuted which quickly became a collector’s item for those who treasured designer Rozemerie Cuevas’ fabric creation.
