Stockwell Day Confirmed $30Billion Shipbuilding Procurement Opportunities for BC Shipyards
As we reported earlier, Canada wanted to upgrade its aging naval fleet and coast guard vessels. While the Honorable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway mentioned that the amount the federal government will spend is in the neighborhood of $30Billion, Defense Minister Peter MacKay indicated last month that Ottawa intended to spend $35 Billion over the next 30 years and will select two shipbuilders, one to build combat vessels and the other non-combat. These two shipbuilders will be responsible for fabricating 28 large ships while there will also be a separate order for more than 100 smaller ships which will be laid aside for competitive bidding from other shipyards, other than the two that will be building the larger ships. Minister Day thought that BC and the westcoast shipyards are in a very good position to land a significant part of the contracts.
Minister Day was in town yesterday to be present at the Port Metro Vancouver infrastructure improvement ground-breaking ceremony. He was also here to start a series of economic roundtable to deliver news from Ottawa and to discuss issues with key business leaders and thinkers from across the nation about how to sustain long term growth and prosperity for Canada in a global economic recovery that remains fragile.
