Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope Celebrates 30th Anniversary in April 2010

The newly refurbished van used by Terry Fox and his people in the Marathon of Hope was on display at the Vancouver International Show 2010 in early April this year.

The van held such meaning for Terry’s people today as the vehicle was where Terry had slept and rested during his Marathon of Hope tour. He usually took a break after running two miles. But sometimes, the pain from his amputated leg and his body were so great that he had to stop.

On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox started his intended cross-Canada run in St. John’s Newfoundland to raise fund for cancer research. However, his journey had to be cut short in September that year near ThunderBay, ON after he learned the cancer had spread to his lungs. Even with Pope John Paul II sending his prayers from the Vatican, Terry died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 23.

2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Terry Fox’s historic journey for charity.

Terry’s initial goal was to raise one million dollar for cancer research, but to date, Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope and the Terry Fox Foundation had raised $500Million and continued to fulfill Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer.

The Terry Fox Run has also spread across the globe to Europe, Cuba, China, India and other places.

According to Fred Fox, Terry’s brother, outside Canada, Cuba is the country that has some of the most loyal followers of the Terry Fox Run.
