The Miss World Canada 2012 Gala Celebration included talent performances by contestants/delegates. Courtney Woodford from Triton, Newfoundland and Labrador sang an opera aria. Adding to the multicultural flavor of the evening, Poonam Punni and Nisheeth Proshanti danced to South Asian songs and music for some Bollywood-style entertainment. The night’s activities took place on May 13, 2012 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond BC near Vancouver.

For the “Beauty with a Purpose” pageant (meant to emphasize both inner and outer beauty), Tara Teng of Langley BC was crowned the winner and will represent Canada to compete in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, China for the Miss World 2012 title on August 18, 2012. Miss World Canada 2012 helped raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity.

The crowning of Tara Teng as Miss World Canada 2012, 1st Runner-up Lisa Deane and 2nd Runner-up Tanya Halata took place in Vancouver on May 13, 2012 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond BC.

The “Beauty With a Purpose” beauty contest helps raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity. Tara Teng became the next ambassador representing Canada to compete in the Miss World Pageant in Ordos, China (Inner Mongolia) later this year.

Miss World® Canada helps raise funds for Variety-The Children’s Charity. So far, the organization has raised more than $500 million globally. Beyond philanthropy, the pageant also aims to inspire women and enrich those contestants who participated for a lifelong career of giving, helping the less fortunate especially children with special needs and enabling them to build a better future.

The winner of Miss World Canada receives an all-expense paid trip to Ordos in China to compete in the Miss World® pageant, as well as scholarships, prizes, and leadership opportunities. This year’s pageant falls right on Mother’s Day and is therefore dedicated to the occasion.

This is the FIRST EVER concert that Vitas has performed in Vancouver, Canada at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond, BC on February 03, 2011. Vitas sang in different languages: Italian (Nessun Dorma, O Sole Mio, La Donna Mobile, Ave Maria), Chinese (The Tibetan Plateau) and, of course, Russian where the singer is from. The concert is a brand new production named Sleepless Nights and Vitas is being branded as an ‘Artist Who You Have Been Waiting For.’

The high octave operatic style of music has that unique Vitas showmanship coupled with a genuine desire to please the audience which made him such an international star who has sold more than 100 million CDs worldwide. In his official Russian web site, Vitas is known as an author/composer/actor.

The live music performance featured popular songs from Hong Kong in the 1980s to today. A delightful evening for Cantonese music lovers.

It is the Year of The Rabbit for the 2011 Chinese New Year (CNY) in the lunar calendar. Vancouver has a very substantial Chinese community and around this time of the year, there is usually a concert or two from the Chinese community to welcome a new year and have a good start. As is often the case, this concert is associated with some charity cause. This year it is no exception.

A CNY concert was being held on January 28, 2011 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond, BC. The event was organized by the Vancouver Metropolitan Lions Club to help raise funds for the Richmond Hospital. A number of singers and performers originated form Hong Kong were invited to participate in the evening’s program. The artists include Li Lung Kee, (???), Joe Tai, Heiman Wong and Queenie Lee. It is mainly a concert of Cantonese and a few Mandarin and English songs. Musical arrangement by Samuel Chan was designed for the audience to reminiscence the fabulous Cantonese pop tunes of the 1980s and then progressively lead into the modern era of popular songs of today in Hong Kong.

Why not mix fashion and model catwalk with opera and symphony and presents both as a double bill at a performance arts theatre?

That was what the Vancouver International Fashion Model and Beauty Pageant and Orient Expressione did with pop-opera & Classical music starring tenors Jack Li and Richard Tyce with the Solstice Symphony Orchestra conducted by Albania-born maestro Bujar LLapaj. Other invited guests included soprano Caitlin Robinson, singer/songwriter Rachel Landrecht, singer Riley McMitchell and 2010 Dance World Cup Canada Gold Medalist Travis Lim. The event took place on December 05, 2010 at the River Rock Show Theatre in Richmond BC. The fashion and beauty pageant were actually held concurrently while the opera and symphony was in session and during recess as well.

It seems like a good idea that makes sense and there have been recent examples of that as well.

Earlier this year at the New York city hall, The Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (or New York Fashion Week) announced that for the first time ever it will host the biannual event at the Lincoln Centre, home to the renowned Metropolitan Opera house and American Ballet Theatre. About 1,000 stores signed up to participate in the New York Fashion Night Out which included a fashion show on September 7th at Lincoln Center. Fashion icon Anna Wintour, Donna Karan, Tommy Hilfiger, Mary-Kate Olsen, Marc Jacobs, up-and-rising designer Alexander Wang etc. were on hand at the press conference with NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg describing the event as “the nexus between the visual arts and the performing arts.”

Just last year, the Boston Symphony Orchestra organized Project Tchaikovsky, a competition in which young designers created couture based in response to the Russian composer’s work such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and the 1812 Overture.

Many consider fashion to be a cultural arts anyway, so maybe we shall see more of this kind of fusion between fashion and fine arts that some regard as a desirable combination.
